Gashora Waders Conservation Project

Gashora Swamp in one among significant wetlands in Rwanda, and one part of the larger Mugesera-Rweru complex swamps it’s famous for its rich biodiversity, with abundance of over 209 birds species reported via eBird which make it hotspot. This iconic place is know as largest migration stopover of both passerines and wader species apart from Akagera National Park. The biodiversity richness has changed over the years to degradation, Gashora Swamp host over 34 iconic Waders species such as Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) NT as well as number threatened include Papyrus Yellow Warbler (Calamonastides gracilirostris) VU, Bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus) EN, Martial Eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus) EN, and Papyrus Gonolek (Laniarius mufumbiri) NT. Restoration project create spaces for species resilience and sustainability while contributing to economic efficiencies through avitourism.
