Rwanda Birds Atlas Project (RBAP)is scientific data collection research project aim at collecting bird data in Rwanda to understand birds status with the help of valued input from Citizen Scientists. A species distribution is the most fundamental information need in order to conserve it. Since 1969 birds record where collected across Rwanda and documented by different authors from publication of Henri Schoutedens Checklist 55 years ago to first published book on Birds in Rwanda an Atlas and Handbook in 2018 by Gael R. Vande Weghe. In past 50 years like other most African Country Rwanda has undergone in very deep changes, the human population tripled and natural and semi-natural habitat which covered almost half of country have reduced about 10% this led to habitat restriction from wetlands, savannah forest to protected areas.
However, some species declined gradually which leads to their extinction in Rwanda, others are very few which is difficult to know if they really survived in small number somewhere or disappeared. Therefore, Rwanda Bird Atlas Project aims to map current distribution of all Rwanda Bird species and describe their status with the help of valued input from Citizen Scientists
Volunteer members of the public who are keen to contribute through birding and submitting their observations to the project, Rugezi Ornithology Center will tell the story of changing bird distribution and abundance from efforts of many citizen scientist birders to provide powerful tool for conservation
